You may not know but I have had a serious journey with my own relationship with sugar over the last 30 plus years!

In my teens I didnโ€™t have any idea I was living off of a lot of sugar. After all I just ate the standard cereal option for breakfast (the one I ate was basically equivalent to starting the day with dessert), chocolate or biscuits or some through the day as a snack and then invariably craved more sugar in between.

Totally normal right ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ.

Don’t get me wrong I ate some fresh, healthful food too but I was definitely on the sugar roller coaster that you may know all too well!

I was constantly yawning and slumping down on to anything that would take my weight whenever and wherever I could do so.

At times I would feel like I could nod off if only I didn’t have sport or work or study to do.

This sad state of affairs continued for far too long and I shamed myself about it on repeat ๐Ÿ˜ญ.

If we jump forward to my mid twenties the situation hadn’t really changed.

I did not feel refreshed on waking, my head was foggy, it took me ages to feel like I had come to and I was dealing with various degrees of cravings every single day.

I’d manage to stave them off some days but it was a relentless cycle which always worsened in the lead up to my period.

It took up so much of my time and energy ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ.

But now, as a 48 year old, I’m so grateful to not be dealing with that draining cycle of trying to ignore the cravings and then feeling like I’m failing when I “give in” ๐Ÿ˜”.

Of course that didn’t happen with a magic wand or a single miracle pill (although the right supplements can help if you know what to take).

It took me years to gather all the resources, skills and wisdom to get these results. BUT it doesn’t have to take you half as long as that.

Too much sugar, in the form of refined carbohydrates such as cakes, biscuits,ย  bread and pasta, can lead to fat storage.

That fat is stored in the liver where it reduces the liver’s capacity to make energy as it’s clogged with fat.

A fat percentage above 5% in the liver is known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, which is a large and growing issue in the western world.

It’s linked to fatigue, inflammation, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and even serious liver disease.

It also compromises the liverโ€™s performance generally including its ability to detoxify from all the chemicals it comes into contact with.

This also further impacts energy levels and can make fatigue worse as well as contribute to weight gain, especially around the middle.

Excess sugar can also raise cholesterol and accelerate the ageing process.

And of course, it plays havoc with your blood sugar levels, causing inconsistent energy levels throughout the day, and leaving you on a roller coaster that isn’t fun in the slightest ๐Ÿ˜ตโ€๐Ÿ’ซ.
